Your National Tax Number (NTN) is the starting point for almost everything else in Pakistan’s tax system — filing returns, registering for sales tax, appearing on the Active Taxpayer List, even opening certain business accounts. The good news: getting one is free, online, and usually takes a couple of days.
Please note: FBR procedures and forms change from time to time. Use this as a general walkthrough and confirm the current process with the FBR or a qualified tax advisor.
What is an NTN?
The NTN is the unique identifier the Federal Board of Revenue uses to recognise you as a taxpayer. For individuals, your CNIC generally serves as your NTN. For companies and associations of persons (AOPs), a separate NTN is issued to the entity. Registering for it is often called “becoming a filer” — though strictly, filer status comes from actually filing your return (more on that in our ATL guide).
